All AS/400 Tip Categories / Client Access / Transferring DBF files

Question:

I am desperately trying to find out how to transfer a PC dbf file to the 400. Have CA 95/NT V3R1 on ethernet to AS400 V3R2. Haven't learned ODBC or VB yet. Sorry if this is old news. Thanks

Answer(s):

If you need a quick an reliable utility to convert DBF files to PC ASCII before uploading the file to the AS/400 i can recommend that you take a look at the URL http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Lakes/2414/ Where you can find a command-line utility written by Bruce Guthrie called CONVERT. It converts to an from ASCII delimited, fixed and dBase formats from the dos-prompt (or in batch files) using an *.FDF like definition file. You are able to truncate fields and records, make simple queries etc. It's FREEWARE by the way. I use it quite frequently. It really is very both quick and reliable even with very large files.

CA95/NT doesn't support the transfer of DBF files so you'll have to export the file from DBASE, or whatever database program, to an ASCII or comma-delimited file. You can then follow steps outlined in Jimmy Parker's post.

The easiest way is to create the file on the AS/400 first, that has the same format as the PC file. Then put a record in it and transfer it down to the PC using the CA data transfer function with the same format as you PC file (probably CSV). This gives you the file description .fdf file that you need for the transfer up to the AS/400. Then, transfer the PC file up to the AS/400 using this .fdf file.
